Course Title: Computers in Education - 3 credits
      Winter and SpringTerms 2009 - Hybrid (some Online, some Face-to-face) - CRN: tba

Course Description:
   This course will analyze the use of computers as a tool in education. Students will examine strategies and techniques for using computers in the delivery and management of instruction. Activities will include hands-on development of kills in the use of available hardware and software.

Course Goals:

   Students will:

  • Survey the historical, philosophical, and theoretical background of technology and uses of computers by
    • reading the textbooks, periodicals, and other handout materials,
    • participating in online discussions.
  • Survey the instructional uses of computers in the classroom by
    • reading the textbooks, periodicals, and other handout materials,
    • participating in online discussions.
  • Learn to use the computer as a teaching tool by
    • becoming familiar with both hardware and software,
    • using application software to develop word processed documents, a graphics design, and a spreadsheet,
    • demonstrating the educational uses of software in classrooms,
    • participating in discussions around the use of the computer in classrooms,
    • acquiring skills in the use of computer networks and telecommunications,
    • using a authoring program to create a short content lesson,
    • presenting the lesson online.
Competencies:
   Upon completing this course, the student will be able to:
  • recognize and define computer terminology, concepts, and equipment related to the uses of computers in educational settings,
  • effectively apply word processing, spreadsheets and graphics software to instructional and management tasks in the classroom,
  • work effectively on computer tasks both individually and in small learning groups,
  • evaluate the quality and instructional potential of courseware,
  • author a short computer generated lesson in a chosen content area,
  • identify methodologies for the integration of computers into educational settings, give a brief summary of three journal articles related to computer use in the classroom, give a personal reaction to each and relate it to your interest area and class discussions,
  • produce a short, but specific reflective paper on the potential of applications and integration of computers within you particular instructional setting.
Readings:
   There will be a variety of sources of readings. One book is required reading: Failure to Connect by Jane Healy. Another book is recommended as a resource for technical computer skills. Other readings will be journal articles accessible from the library or online.

Assignments:
   Assignments will be uploaded periodically under the link Assignments. Typically uploads will be done on Saturday and the activities of that week are to be conducted during that week and before the next Sunday. Specifics for some assignments are given with the assignments.
  1. Write a journal review using APA standards and multiple features of word processor
  2. Write reviews of two journal articles and respond to other reviewers online
  3. Create a formatted spreadsheet with formulas
  4. Create a lesson using Powerpoint presentation using images and links
  5. Design a brief lesson for use on online
  6. Particiapte in discussions on textbook and journal articles
  7. Complete a final test
Grading Criteria:
  • Communicating and Socializing- 10%
  • Participation in online discussions and class activities - 10%
  • Textbook discussions - 10%
  • Three reading reviews - 20%
  • Spreadsheet - 10%
  • Powerpoint - 10%
  • Website - 10%
  • Final test - 10%
Grades will be posted on the Internet from time to time. Use this posting to verify the completion of your assignments.
