Assignments

Week One (due January 24)

   Send me an email (
saxowsd@wou.edu). Attach a photo of yourself, your pet, your family or whatever. Include "CSE610" in the subject. (2 points)

Go to Moodle, click on Education in the left column, click on ED421 Sax (Denvy Saxowsky is the teacher), login when it prompts you with the same username and password used in most WOU programs and Introduce yourself.(2 points)

Go to Skype.com on your favorite browser, download Skype, register, send me a text message or give me a call .(2 points)

Go to my blog, comment on my blog. For extra credit setup your own blog. (2 points)

Try one or more of the other forms of socializing and tell me what you did either via that form of communictaion or with another email. (2 points)

Week Two (due January 26)

Your second assignment is find an article, read it and write a brief reflection in
Moodle that includes a short summary and your reaction or thoughts.
The topic of this first article will be very general: technology and education, or computers and education, or technology in education. You get the picture.
You should be able to access the WOU library from your home and find an article online. After going to www.wou.edu/library, choose ERIC in the pop up menu by Articles under Find Information. Then enter the keywords and watch for an article that fits your interest and you can read online. You don't have to use the online process, but the journal should be a professional journal with professional educators and not a commercial magazine off the news stands.
Then go back an read other classmates' reviews.
How about trying to get this complete by January 26. The the first day of the Chinese new year.

Week Three (due February 2)

Your third assignment is like the second one. We will continue reading journal articles while we are waiting to find the text book "Failure to Connect" by Jane Healy. Find another article, read it and write a review/reflection but not in Moodle. Write this one in in APA format (basically doubled 10-12 point Times with 1" margins on standard letter size). A part of this assignment is to use maybe some little used features of Word, such as setting margins and adding a header for page numbers.
You have read the article, you have compiled your thoughts about the article so it will be easy to do the second part of this assignment. Using Word again put your thoughts on a document that is more like a poster, a promotional flyer with variations of fonts and colors, and using some images. Include large bold fonts for titles, smaller fonts for subtitles, and regular size font for the body. Use images from the Internet, one you have created or from the clipart in Word.
Again: you should be able to access the WOU library from your home and find an article online.

For a topic this time, choose something around education and technology but try to focus on your specialty, the subject you hope to teach. For example, if you are a language arts teacher wannabe, do your search with keywords like: technology or computer, education, and language arts.
How about sending these two documents as attachments to me as an email by February 2.

Week Four (due February 9)

Hopefully you have found a copy of the text book "Failure to Connect" by Jane Healy. Hopefully you have also started to realize we can make it through this class without losing all our hair.
Your assignment is simply read the first three chapters. It's not hard reading. Go to Moodle in Week Four (January 26-January 30) and write your thoughts about what you read. Return to Moodle and this forum several times to read your classmates' comments and add additional comments.
Try to write your first comments by February 9.

Week Five and Six (due March14)

Two separate and different presentations and the topics are your choice. You will present only one in class, your choice again. The criteria are
  • Each presentation will be at least 10 slides
  • Each presentation will be related to education either as a lesson or a part of a lesson you will teach, a presentation on education to peers, parents or other adults, or a presentation that might be created by your students as an activity as a part of your lesson
  • Both presentations will use good design principles
  • Both presentations will demonstrate the breath and depth of the student's understanding of Powerpoint presentations
  • One presentation will be advanced manually by the speaker and the other will advance automatically
  • At least one presentation will include sound and/or movies
  • At least one presentation will have a series of bullets on a single slide that appear when prompted
  • At least one presentation will be saved as a webpage (manual advancement of slides recommended) and at least one presentation will be saved as a movie (automatic advancement recommended)
  • At least one presentation will include hyperlinks that are manually controlled; at least one hyperlink will link within the presentation and at least one will link outside the presentation such as to a website
  • Buttons will be used in at least one presentation
  • Images and texts will be used appropriately in each presentation
  • Animation and slide transitions will be used appropriately and will not be a distraction in both presentations
  • One assignment will be uploaded on the the Internet, the other will be attached to an email. Movies may be displayed in class on March 14.

Scoring rubric is available online to guide the creation of your presentation.

We will probably present some of our Powerpoints in class on March 14.

Week Seven (due March 9)

Hopefully you have found a copy of the text book "Failure to Connect" by Jane Healy. Hopefully you have also started to realize we can make it through this class without losing all our hair.
Your assignment is simply read the first three chapters. It's not hard reading. Go to Moodle in Week Four (January 26-January 30) and write your thoughts about what you read. Return to Moodle and this forum several times to read your classmates' comments and add additional comments.
Try to write your first comments by March 9.

Week Eight (due March 16)

This assignment involves three parts and the explanation is quite lengthy, so it will not be repeated but linked back to Week Eight.
The three parts are 1) a spreadsheet listing students, their scores of an assessment before a lesson is taught, their scores after the lesson is taught and the gain in learning; 2) a gradebook with a list of students but more importantly the list of all assignments, the weight or importance of each assignment and a letter grade calculated by the spreadsheet; and 3) a spreadsheet of the student's design that may be used in a teaching/learning environment.
Either upload these spreadsheets onto your WOU public_hmtl drive (p-drive), upload them as a document in Moodle or attach them to an email by March 16.

Week Nine (due March 30)

Let's put our thoughts to Healy's comment:

Remember that the comments may continue indefinitely, the initial reactions to this second part of the book are due March 30.

Week Ten (due April 18)

Using Dreamweaver or Netscape Composer, create an educational website with an interactive lesson appropriate for the authorization and content you plan to teach. Your website should include:

  • A homepage to grab attention and introduce your topic
  • Links on your homepage to all other pages
  • At least five additional pages with supporting information
  • Home buttons/links on every page
  • At least two images
  • Links to at least two websites that students can access for more information

Before you start building your website:
  1. Create a new folder on your desktop (File / NewFolder)
  2. Give your folder a short name, use cse610website (all small letters) for this class
  3. Name your homepage: index.html
  4. Save your homepage to your website folder
  5. Save all pages, as you work on them, to your website folder
  6. Inside your website folder, create another new folder to hold your images
  7. Give this folder the name images (all small letters)
  8. Put all images you plan to use into the folder before you add them to your website
When your website is complete:
  1. Drag your entire website folder into the PUBLIC_HTML folder in your network folder
  2. Open your web browser and type your personal URL into the address bar to check your website using the following format:
    www.wou.edu/~your_login_name/cse610website
When editing your website:
  1. Drag your entire website folder from the public_html folder onto your desktop
  2. Make your change and modifications to your website
  3. Repeat the process of dragging your folder back into the PUBLIC_HTML folder.
Other helpful links are on the
Links page.

This assignment is due by the end of the term, April 18.
Assignment Eleven (due April 13)

This is the last time that you need to find an article, read it and write a brief reflection in
Moodle.
Within the realm of this subject of this course, you can choose the article. If by no other means, just by the nature of the passing of time, you should have developed some ideas about computers in education particularly as they relate to your style of teaching. There are probably some open questions in your mind. See if you can find an article to answer some of those questions. Remember that if you have those questions, some of your classmates also have those questions.
Remember to consider only professional journals. You can find them by linking to www.wou.edu/library or by clicking here.
Don't forget to take advantage of your classmates' reading and go back an read their reviews.
How about trying to get this complete by April 13, the day after Easter.

Assignment Twelve (due April 20)

   Participate in discussions on
Moodle with your thoughts of your readings on the Alliance for Children website. Submit your comments sometime in the next week, before April 20.

Assignment Thirteen (due April 18)

Let's just continue to work on finishing up our webpages and have them ready for our on-campus meeting on April 18.

Assignment Fourteen (due May 4)

This class is approaching its final stages and it's time to bring things together and summary. We have two assignments major assignments pending: finishing the website creation and completing the answers to the exit exam, another term for a final exam.

The website creation assignment has been laid out in the lab experience and in
Lesson 10.

The exit questions are linked here and are due at the end of the term, August 4. These are four scenarios to which you will respond. They are not highly technical questions although reference to data and research is valuable. These questions are to demonstrate your overall understanding of computers in education. Do not write more words to merely add length, however you should be thorough and complete in your explanation and answer. The scenarios are designed recognizing that most answers will not be thoroughly answered in less than one page, two pages seem much more reasonable.

All assignments must be submitted to the instructor on or before May 4.
