Assignments

Lesson One
Due July 2

Let's push the edge with our use of the word processor Microsoft Word. Your first assignment is to create a document of at least two pages in length using all following features. The document will be a review of two related articles.

Content:
This will be your first article review. Select an article from a reputable source, typically a journal where the articles are reviewed by peers, either from a library or the Internet, in hardcopy or electronic format. Choose a topic with the parameters of "computers in education." This is a very broad topic, but it will give us a chance to get our feet damp finding articles and selecting topics. Choose a much more specific topic within the broad range. After having chosen a topic and perhaps read that article, choose a second article on the same or related topic so that you can quote at least two references and list at least two articles in your bibliography.

Formatting:
Using Microsoft Word, compose your review.
  • Use the Paragraph feature to indent new paragraphs .4", with 12 point spacing between paragraphs, and 1.5 spacing within paragraphs.
  • Include a footnote as a reference with the content of a paragraph.
  • Include the page number on the top right of each page (in the header) but not the first page.
  • Choose appropriate font size and style, and alignment for the title of the document.
  • In a faded gray color in the footer include the location of this document on your computer.
  • Include a bibliography page created by using Noodlebibs, which can be found on the Internet at www.wou.edu/library. Use the APA format. Include the title for this page and include the page number.
  • Did you set your margins?
Additional formatting, the second part of this assignment:
Still using Microsoft Word, reformat your review, almost like a newspaper or newsletter.
  • Reformat your document so that it has the single title on the top of the page but the content is in two columns.
  • Deduce the size of your margins (using the Document feature).
  • Single space between lines.
  • Deduce the paragraph indents to approximately the size of two characters.
  • Include no extra space between paragraphs.
  • Include an short Table of Contents in the first column.
  • Include a short Index of some key words from the article.
  • Include a textbox approximately in the middle partially extending into each column.
  • How's the image coming along?
  • Do not include a bibliography page.
  • Change the font face.
The third word processing assignment:
This time using Microsoft Word create a one-page poster, the front of a program, a menu, or a flyer.
  • This is your opportunity to create something with fewer specific requirements.
  • Use the Table feature to help format the document.
  • Be creative and take risks on formatting and design.
  • Use good design guidelines, such as Contrast when objects are different, Repeat the same format for similar concepts, Align items to help the eye to move across the document, place items in the same Proximity for similar concepts, and use proper variations in text.
  • Save this document as a webpage. Save it directly in your public_html folder on Western Oregon University compuiter system. Email me the name of the document.
Submitting the assignment:
It would be good to have some time to work through all these details, so submit the first two assignments to me as attachments in an email to me by Monday evening, July 2. Submit the name of the document (third assignment) you saved in your public_html folder in the same email. We will not be meeting on campus on July 4th.
