About this class: ED421 Winter 2009

This is a new format for this class and so it will develop as the term proceeds. Along with changes in format a topic like Computers in Education will reflect the rapdi changes in technology, society and education meaning that what was taught last term may be out of date and what we teach and learn next week may not yet be on the market.

With that in mind, please be patient with me as I work with other faculty as we collaboratively determine a best course of study. I will update this website and email you information as it develops. Meanwhile, you can learn a little about me (it will save time in class so that I don't have to blab about myself). Also you can follow the adventures of my wife and me in China this past fall by viewing our homemade blog at www.saxowsky.com/chinablog.

About your Instructor: Denvy Saxowsky

denvyI was born and educated in North Dakota, and spent most of my life in Alaska raising a family where I worked with computers during their advent in the 60's. Later I made wooden toys in bush Alaska. While I left my heart in Alaska, I did spend three years at my Alma Mater, Jamestown College as director of student activities before coming to Oregon in '95.

In Oregon I and my wife built our dream home in the foothills of the coastal range. In '99 I earned my MS Ed-IT at WOU while teaching mathematics at Chemeketa Community College and working as window/door salesman and house designer in Dallas. In 2000 I started teaching information technology in the College of Education with a periodic course of mathematics at Chemeketa or here at Western.

My three children are scattered from the North Slope of Alaska where Darron works as a surveyor, to North Dakota where Rebecca and her husband have two young daughters, and down south to Atlanta, where Marc, who works as a network analyst for the company the handles your airline reservations, and Tina, his wife, who does biochemical research at Emory University, have a toddler son.

As a pastime, my wife and I have lead four work groups to MIssissippi in 2005-06. Prior to that we had lead work groups to Ukraine, Mexico, Alaska and locally since '96. We have traveled to parts of Europe from time to time and in '81 drove through 43 states with our young family. Recently I traveled to China as an ambassor of Western Oregon University.

About this course: ED421 Integrating Technology

The topic "Integrating Technology" changes from day to day and ideas about how technology and education connect are as varied as the number of persons in the discussion. Regardless where opinions lie, technology is affecting education today. Our job is to understand how it is connected education and how we can affect that connection.

To do that we will discuss the connection between education and technology and learn skills that we might use and properly assess the technology in the classroom and on the Web. While I have worked with computers most of my life and still spend a great deal of time using a computer, my passions are the outdoors and woodworking. A computer is a tool as is a pencil or a hammer; we must master it and should be aware of how we can best use it.
