Assignment: Using
Netscape 7 Composer, create an educational website with an interactive
lesson appropriate for the authorization and content you plan
to teach. Your website should include:
A homepage to grab attention and introduce your
topic
Links on your homepage to all other pages
At least five additional pages with supporting
information
Home buttons/links on every page
At least two images
Links to at least two websites that students
can access for more information
Before you start building your website:
Create a new folder on your desktop (File>NewFolder)
Give your folder a short name, use ed421
(all small letters) for this class
Name your homepage: homepage.html
Save your homepage to your website folder
Save all pages, as you work on them, to your
website folder
Inside your website folder, create another new
folder to hold your images
Give this folder the name images (all
small letters)
Put all images you plan to use into the folder
before you add them to your website
When your website is complete:
Connect to your public_html by selecting Finder,
then Go, and then Connect to Server.
Select smb://cougar/public_html and enter your
password
After the public_html icon appears on the Desktop,
drag your entire website folder into the public_html
folder in your network folder
Open your web browser and type your personal
URL into the address bar to check your website using the following
format:
www.wou.edu/~your_login_name/ed421, e.g. www.wou.edu/~jsmith03/ed421

Creating Web Pages using Netscape 7 Composer
To open Netscape Composer:
Click on Macintosh HD, then Applications and
finally Netscape
From the Window menu, choose Composer
To start a blank page:
From the File menu, choose New
Choose Composer Page and a Composer window containing
a blank page opens.
To edit a web page you are currently
browsing:
From the File menu, choose Edit Page
The current Navigator window becomes a Composer
window containing the document you were viewing
Add your own data and edit the page to make
it your own
To open a page you already started in Composer:
Choose Composer from the Windows menu.
Open the File menu and choose Open File
Locate the file you want on your computer
Click Open. A Composer window opens containing
the specified file.
To view your page in a Navigator (browser) window:
Open the File menu and choose Browse Page.
The Composer window remains open behind the
new Navigator window.
To return to Composer, simply close the Navigator
window
To change text size, style, font, and
color:
Highlight the text you want to format.
From the Format menu, choose Font, Size, Style,
etc.
Make choices as desired
OR, use the Character toolbar at the top of
the page
To insert horizontal lines:
Click the location in the Composer window where
you want the line to appear.
Open the Insert menu and choose Horizontal Line
To specify the line's height, width, alignment,
and shading, double-click on the line.
To insert a table:
Place the insertion point where you want the
table to appear in your document.
From the Table menu, choose Insert, then Table.
Use the Insert Table dialog box to set up your
table.
Click OK.
To add rows, columns or cells to your
table:
Click where you want to add space.
From the Table menu, choose Insert; then choose
Row, Column, or Cell.
To delete rows, columns or cells from your table:
Click in a row, column, or cell.
From the Table menu, choose Delete; then choose
Row, Column, or Cell.
To change a table's look:
To change an entire table, click anywhere inside
it; to change a specific row or cell click inside the row or
cell.
From the Table menu, choose Table Properties.
Click the Table or Cells tab.
Make your changes.
Click OK.
The settings you choose in the Table Properties dialog box always
override the settings you chose when you first created the table.
To move, copy, or delete a table:
Click in the table, then from the Table menu,
choose Select>Table.
To copy or move: Use the Edit menu's cut, copy,
and paste options.
To delete: Choose Delete>Table from the
Table menu.
To insert an image:
Click where you want the image to appear in
your document.
Open the Insert menu and choose Image.
Click Choose File
Locate your image file on your computer and
click Open
If necessary, adjust settings in the Images
Properties dialog box.
You can insert GIF and JPEG images into your
web page.
To wrap text around an image:
Double click on the image
The Image dialog box will appear
Click on the Appearance tab
Click on the xyz button
Choose the option you desire
To view the wrapped text, save your pages, then
open your document in the Navigator (browser) view (File>Browse
Page)
To set page colors and backgrounds:
From the Format menu, choose Page Colors and
Background.
To change colors, click Use Custom Colors, then
click on each color to choose a new one
To add a background image, click on the Choose
File button and locate the image you wish to use (which you
have saved in your website folder)
Click OK
To link to items within the same page:
Put the cursor at the beginning of a line where
you want to create a target, or select some text at the beginning
of a line.
From the Insert menu, choose Named Anchor.
Type a name for the target in the edit box (up
to 30 characters). If you selected some text in step 1, this
box already contains a name.
Click OK.
A Target icon (visible only in the Composer
window) appears in your document to mark the target's location.
Note: Targets are also called anchors.
Highlight the text or image that you want to
link to the target.
From Insert menu, choose Link.
Click on the arrow next to the text box (above
the Choose File button)
Drag down to select the anchor you created.
To link to other pages:
Select the text or image you want to link to
another page.
From the Insert menu, choose Link.
In the Link Location box, type the address of
the web page you want to link to.
OR
Click on the Choose File button and locate
the file on your computer you wish to link to.
Publishing your website:
Your homepage MUST be named: home.html
All pages and images must be contained in the
same folder (you should have them all in the folder as you create
your website)
Make sure you are logged onto the network
In your network folder, locate the folder named:
public.html
Drag your entire webpage folder with its contents
into the public.html folder
To view your published website, type in the
URL: www.wou.edu/~yourusername/webfoldername
(for example: www.wou.edu/~bucym/Technology)
