Lesson Eight - Beyond the Textbook
Internet Effects on Us

I want us to spend one more block of time tackling the issue of how the Internet affects society and children. Have we exhausted our thoughts? Have we thought beyond the standards that require using the computer, the fact that the computer is sitting in the classroom gathering dust, the idea that filter saves the child but defeats the Constitution? Have we considered fully how the human body, mind and spirit develop with time? Must we crawl before we walk in order to read well? Should we touch the shape of a letter before we stroke the computer keyboard? How do health, obesity, exercise, coordination, personal relations, the warmth of touch and zillions of other topics fit into the picture?

Let's venture into the website of called Alliance for Childhood. There are two documents in particular that I would like you to read. One is a statement issued on September 12, 2000 by The Alliance for Childhood entitled Children and Computers: A Call For Action. The other is a document called "Fools Gold: A Critical Look at Computers in Childhood" You can download a PDF document or read it online in your browser. There is a fair bit of reading here, so dive in and try to identify the high points and the themes.
