Meat and Beans
The meat and beans group includes foods that contain protein which includes meat, poultry, beans, eggs, nuts and seeds.

Vegetables |
Foods: Foods in the grain group include meat like beef, pork, lamb, poultry like chicken and turkey, as well as eggs, nuts, seedsdry beans and peas. Note that dry beans and peas are apart of the vegetable group as well as the meat and beans group. |
Fruits |
Servings: The ammount of servings of meat and beans needed depends on sex, age, and activity level. The average serving need is about 3-6 ounces. An ounce of meat or beans looks like a serving of meat about the size of your fist, or a 1/4 cup of dry beans, nuts and seeds, or 1 egg or a tablespoon of peanut butter. |
Grains |
Health benefits: meats and beans contin many nutrients that provide benefits for your body. The maint nutrient that meats and beans contain is protein which helps to build muscles, bones, skin cells, blood cells and cartilage. They also contain Vitamin E which is an anti-oxidant and helps protect other vitamins in the body from oxidation, Iron which carries oxygen to the blood, magnesium which helps build bones and release energy and zinc which helps maintain a healthy immune system. |
Milk |
Eating meat and beans: Many people eat their servings of meat and beans as the main portion of their meal by eating a chicken breast, or steak, but they can also be mixed with other foods in various recipes. For example a strifry may include several kinds of vegetables mixed with either tofu, or chicken, spaghetti can include ground turkey, beef or susage and tacos can be made with meats and beans and then topped with lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. Also nuts and seeds can be eaten as a snack as serving from teh meat and beans group. It is important to learn to vary the kinds of foods you eat from this category in order to get several different kinds of nurtients. |
Meat and Beans |
Lean Vs. Fatty: Many of the food items from the meat and beans group can unfortunately be high in satruated fat which has negative health implications. Suggestions for limiting fat intake include trimming fat from meats like steak and chicken, eating fish which is natrually lower in fat, and eating nuts and seeds which contain healthier kinds of fat. |
