I
was born and educated in North Dakota and spent most of my life
in Alaska raising a family where I worked with computers during
their advent in the 60's and later made wooden toys in bush Alaska.
While I left my heart in Alaska, I did spend three years at my
Alma Mater, Jamestown College as director of student activities
before coming to Oregon in '95.
In Oregon I and my wife
built our dream home in the foothills of the coastal range. In
'99 I earned my MS Ed-IT at WOU while teaching mathematics at
Chemeketa Community College and working as window/door salesman
and house designer in Dallas. In 2000 I started teaching information
technology in the College of Education with a periodic course
of mathematics at Chemeketa or here at Western.
My three children are
scattered from the North Slope of Alaska where Darron works as
a surveyor, to North Dakota where Rebecca and her husband have
two daughters and down south to Atlanta, where Marc, who works
as a network analyst for the company the handles your airline
reservations, and Tina, his wife, who does biochemical research
at Emory University, have a baby son.
As a pastime, my wife and I
have lead four work groups to MIssissippi in 2005-08. Prior to that
we had lead work groups to Ukraine, Mexico, Alaska and locally since
'96. We have traveled to parts of Europe from time to time and in
'81 drove through 43 states with our young family. It is our plan
that we will be teaching English in Nanchang, China during the Fall
2008 term. Join us as we journalize
the adventure.
About this course: CSE625 Creating Internet
Websites
Websites have become a natural
part of our lives from childhood to senior citizens, for pleasure
and for business, in business, government, industry and education.
While designing websites may be secondary in education, the use of
the Internet is interwoven throughout the educational system suggesting
that understanding websites, their design and their impact on education
is critical.
This course will have several focuses.
One as the title suggests is actually designing webpages for learning
the details and mechanics of HTML. Secondly, the course will focus
on what design is most effective in an educational setting. Thirdly,
there will be opportunities to critically assess the value of using
interactive media with the educational setting. And lastly we will
maximize our advancement in the understanding of designing websites.
As we learn and acquire new knowledge,
it is convenient to be receive clear and detailed instructions
what we should do step by step. However as lifelong learner and
in an environment where changes occur almost daily, it is equally
important to learn to discover new and upcoming techniques. Therefore
we will use some step-by-step instructions as a basis for some
work, and then using that basis advance into techniques where
we will have to determine our own step-by-step processes. FInding
a tool and discovering its function and how it can serve us most
effectively is our goal.
We will start by exploring, trying
new techniques and processes to discover the qualities of the
different processes hoping we will find the perfect code. We will
treasure the goals that meet our objectives, cache the ones that
are interest and in the end as the final put all the little gems
together to create a piece of art.
