Western North Dakota

Dry Rolling Hills
The western, the particular, the southwestern portion of North is higher and drier than the eastern part of the state. Dry farming is nestling among rolling hills with ranching using the untillable lands. Further south the land sports buttes and high plateaus. The area also contains rich minerals in particular lignite coal.

Western North Dakota may be best known for its Badlands, appropriately named because the deeply eroded clay hills and poor claylike soils can't be farmed or effectively ranched. Without modern improvements of roads, it's almost impassable. But they are beautiful with the many colored exposed by erosion. Painted Canyon supports that idea. President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt visited the area and helped in created the Roosevelt National Park around this area.
