Eastern North Dakota

Red River Valley
It is said that with the exception of some farmland in southern Ukraine, the soils in the Red River Valley of North Dakota are some of the richest for farming in the world. The valley is essentially flat with few to no landmarks for navigating the area. (My wife comes from that area and I always had a hard time finding her family's farm.) Typical crops would be wheat, sunflowers, sugar beets, corn, dry beans, hay and other small greains. Early farms were large tracts of lands referred to as Bonanza Farms.

Several major cities border the Red River. Fargo, the largest city in North Dakota, Grand Forks, North Dakota and Winnipeg, Canada all border the river. Because the Red River flows north into an area that typically melds later than the wouthern portion, the melding waters flow into ice jams creating frequent floods. Dikes and diversions systems today help with damage to property and lives.
