In 1990 the Mitsubishi Eclipse was first introduced with a body style that was later carried into the year 1991 and then changed from 1992 through 1994. The two styles are referred to as “1ga’s” and “1gb’s”. The 1g represents the first generation of the Mitsubishi Eclipse, which refers to any year between 1990 and 1994. The “a” refers to the first design that was used in 1990 and 1991. The “b” refers to the second design that was used from 1992 to 1994.
Mitsubishi Eclipses seem to hold the stereotype that they are superior because of their big league name, but the truth of it is, regardless of what ignorant people think, is that the Eagle Talon and Plymouth laser hold the same glass all the way around, the same body lines, the same engine, and identical interiors. The reason for this is that before 1995 Diamond Star Motors were the ones producing all three of these cars from the same factory. The 1990 had slightly different bumpers than the 91’s but that is the only noticeable difference between the two years. The only difference between the turbo and non turbo model, aside from the engine, was a few decals, a bulged hood (although all the 2.0L engines required this bulged hood, only the 1.8L engines did not), different body trim in some locations, and a factory boost gauge in the dash. The 1ga Eclipse non turbo models weren’t available with fog lights or a spoiler, but then when 1992 came around, fog lights came into production even in some non turbo models, as well as a sporty spoiler. Only the turbo models had fog lights in 1990 and 1991. The eclipse's taillights that came standard on turbo models previous to 1992 remained the same through 1993 and 1994. The non turbo models used different tail lights before 1992, but then the GS's produced in 1992 and more recent years had the same taillights. There's also the obvious difference that when 1992 came around, pop up headlights were on the out. 1992 was a unique year for all three styles as it held the 1gB body style but remained to have a black top with any color other than black on the lower half of the car. The 1993 and newer eclipses had a solid color body. This is not shown in my pictures but it was a change between the years.
