Our main goal in the MAT program has been to help prepare you with all the necessary skills, knowledge, and dispositions to go out and be a successful, inspired, and highly effective teacher. The final hurdle, of course, is helping you to compete well on the job market. The market has been tight in Oregon across the last couple of years but the MAT program has been very successful in placing our graduates in the teaching force. We don't have the resources to help you through the job search process like the old placement offices of old but... we have prepared some materials for your use that will likely be very helpful to you as you hit the job search trail.

Many of these resources have been borrowed from other places and modified for our use. Keep this in mind as you examine the materials. Use them as you see fit!

Materials list:

  1. Some information about designing quality resumes
  2. Some tips about writing effective cover letters
  3. A bit about making and using a teaching portfolio - something you might take with you to an interview
  4. Some good stuff on interviewing
  5. Part I of the 2004 AAEE Job Search Handbook
  6. Part II of the 2004 AAEE Job Search Handbook

Also... see this list of potential interview questions.

Most folks find jobs in Oregon at the Confederation for Oregon School Administrators website (COSA) found here - go check out how it works to get a feel of things. When job applications ask for a placement file - that's "old school" language for resume, copy of teaching certificate, transcripts, cover letter, and possible the district application. Don't hesitate to call the contact person for job information, exactly what skills and content knowledge they're looking for, and information about deadlines and licensure requirements. Remember though, this would be your first contact with a potential employer and first contacts are critical!
