Carpenter Ants

Color: Red, black, or a combination of both colors. 2 most common species are black.

Size: 1/2-5/8 inch long

Where do they live?: Found all over the U.S. More common in Northern states.

Carpenter ants nest in moist wood including rotted trees or stumps or wood on or in the ground. They also nest in moist or decayed wood of buildings or houses. These ants damage wood by creating tunnels or grooves that appear smooth and are cleared out of sawdust.
