Basic Plant Structure

Root System: Provides support for the plant, absorbs nutrients.

Primary Root: Develops first in a germinating seed

Lateral Root: Develops out of the primary root

Shoot System

Shoot: New growth on the plant

Stem: carries nutrients to the leaves

Node: Where the leaves join the stem

Internode: space between the leaf and stem

Axillary bud:

Petiole: Joins the leaf to the main stem

Leaf: 2 main functions: Photosynthesis and Transpiration

Blade: The narrow part of the leaf, the food factory of the plant
