Assignment Four

Now that we've explored the use of text, images, links, cascading style sheets, templates, library items and image maps, your assignment is to practice using them. For this assignment content is not that important. It is the process that is important.
First create a new HTML page in DreamWeaver. Include a simple table (maybe 2 by 2), an image, a text to serve as a header, a text to serve as a title, and a brief sentence to serve as the body . Save this document as apriltest.html or apriltest.htm in your folder for this class.

Next create a CSS by selecting CSS Styles under the Text item in the DreamWeaver menu. Create a New CSS, name the first one headertext and Define in aprilcsstest.
Define the font as large and bold and some special color. Save HTML document for safety purposes.
Create another CSS style for the body by selecting CSS Styles under the Text item in the DreamWeaver menu. Choose Edit CSS, select aprilcsstest.css and click on Edit.
On the next screen click on New and define another font as small and easily readable. Again have HTML document for safety purposes.

We're going to make this document a template for use with several webpages. We need to decide which portion of the webpage will change as the template changes, therefore on all pages, which which areas of the page will be unique to this page. Highlight an area that will be unique to each individual page, select Insert in the top menu and select Editable Region. Name the region and click OK. Now save this as a template in the same folder.
Create a new HTML document, select your template in the right side of the page and apply it. Make changes to the Editable Region and save as an HTML document in your same folder.
Double click on your template in the Files window to edit the template. You can make changes to any part of the template and that will be reflected on all pages using the template. You can add more Editable Regions.

Choose some text that you will repeat many time on your webpages. Select the library icon in the Files window on the right and click on the little icon to the right of the word Files to add a New Library item. Name this Library item.
This assignment will be accessed on the code that indicates that you have used a style sheet, a library item and a template.

This is due April 29-30.

Assignment Three

It's time. Now is the time. It's time to start thinking about the final project for this class. Write on one or two pages, double spaced what you think is the website of your dreams and hopes. Of course, with time that will change some. Include some thoughts on the following features:
  • the layout, format of the homepage, what is it coming to look like
  • the colors and backgrounds of the different cells of the table
  • the font size, face and color of
    • heading titles
    • subtopic headings
    • the body of the text
    • links
    • auxillary information such as contact information, if any
    • the top banner of the page
  • the purpose or function of the website
  • list of main webpages you will design linked from the homepage
  • list of possible secondary webpages you will design linked from other webpages
  • advanced functions or features of your website such as forms, dynamic behavior, Flash, dynamic layers.

This assignment is due on April 22-23 but you can expect that we will be modifying and changing this as we continue through the class.

Assignment Two (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly)

For this assignment you are to search the Internet to critically review the quality and effectiveness of websites. For a start go to Websites that suck and get other group's opinion. This website also gives tools and hints for de
signing your website. Choose one or more websites and write your thoughts about why it is good or bad. It is not acceptable for you to merely choose one of the Websites that suck and say that you agree. Check out the Top 20 Confessed Web Design Sins.

There are commentaries on good websites also, such as WebReference.com.

Remember write about one page, double-spaced type, with a opening paragraph identifying several websites, at least one paragraph giving details about the good or bad features of the websites and a final paragraph summarizing your argument. The topic? Something like "The Terrible Features of the Foogle Website."

This is due April 15-16.

What tags can do (Assignment One)

Your first written assignment is to list all the tags in the table below and write a brief description of each one. In the description include
  • what is the primary function of the tag
  • what are common attributes of this tag and if some attributes are necessary
  • whether this tag is *necessary, *very important and used frequently, *helpful but not used often, or *fun but seldom used
Gather the information from the Internet, from books and by analyzing the code in different websites.
