Guidelines for Responsible Decision Making

1. Describe the situation that requires a decision.

2. List possible decision you might make.

3. Share the list of possible decisions with a trusted adult.

4. Evaluate the possible results of each decision.

Will this decision result in an action that:

*is healthful?
*is safe?
*is legal?
*shows respect for myself and others?
*follows the guidelines of responsible adults, such as many parents or guardian?
*demonstrates good character?

5. Decide which decision is responsible and most appropriate.

6. Act on your decision and judge the results.

Activity: On a piece of paper that is 11x17, write a tough decision you have had to make in the center. Around the decision, write four choices or options you had when deciding what to do. Under each choice, use the Guidelines for Responsible Decision Making to decide which is the best choice. Write a sentence to describe why or why not each choice is a responsible decision.
