Locations
There are a number of different places to go swimming in and near the Monmouth area. Now, you can go swim anyplace with water, like lakes, ponds, or the ocean, but I would not recommend that. The best places to learn, enjoy, and participate in swimming, and the safest places are public swimming pools. They have life guards and the water is much cleaner than most of the lakes, ponds, and the ocean. Below are some names, and locations of public swimming pools in or near the Monmouth area.
- Western Oregon University's swimming pool (Monmouth, Or)
- Salem city of Walker pool (Salem, Or)
- Salem family Y.M.C.A (Salem, Or)

Helpful Hints
Make sure you dont swim alone, always go swimming with a buddy.
Make sure there is a lifeguard around at all times, and dont go into deep water unless you are skilled at swimming.
Some beginning swimming skills are mentioned below;
- Doggy pattle - This is a very easy skill and most people start swimming this way. You have your hands in front of you, pushing the water down toward the bottom of the pool. Your legs are kicking behind you very quickly. Basically you are crawling really fast in the water.
- Front stroke - This is the basic swimming stroke. You are horizontal in the water and your hands are stretched out over your head one at a time. The first hand that is stretched out over your head moves down under the water, pushing the water behind you. As your hand moves behind your head your other hand, at your side, bends at the elbow and begins to stretch out over your head. You repeat the above step with your arms over and over while kicking your legs. Your head can be under or out of the water. For more skilled individuals, have your head under the water and breath each time your right, or left (you pick) arm bends to go over your head.
- Back stroke - This swimming stroke is dont just like the front stroke except you are on your back. Make sure to keep your head tilted backwards so you can see where you are going and to keep the water out of your mouth.

Cost
Swimmming is a very cheap activity. You just need to buy some basic equipment to do it, then you dont have to buy that equipment again. The only thing that really costs money once you buy your equipment is the price of getting into a public pool. Below are some prices on the basic equiment needed to swim, and the phone numbers to the public pool mentioned above so you can find out the cost of going swimming.
