Geometry Is Found In Nature
Geometry is the area of mathematics in which objects that take up "space".
2-Demensional Shapes Circle A crop circle is a large circle made in the middle of some sort of crop field. Some people believe crop circles to be the work of extraterrestrial life. The center of a circle is called the origin. there are 360 degrees around the origin making up the full circle. Triangle Triangles are one of the strongest shapes. They are commonly used in architecture because of this. There is no coincidence that you see triangle-shaped roofs! of extraterrestrial life. The size of triangles differ. The three angles must have a sum of 180 degrees. An equilateral triangle has three equal sides, and three interior angles of 60 degrees Square There are many squares in nature as well! Can you count how many squares are in this checker board? Remember that all sides of a square must be the same length. All four angles of a square are 90 degrees. Pentagon The Pentagon is a government office. Is it the shape that gave the building a name? Or was it the name was given and then it was built with five sides? A perfect pentagon has five equal sides, and fine equal angles, all measuring 108degrees. Hexagon If you look closely you can see that this honeycomb is made up of hundreds of different hexagons stacked on each other. Hexagons are six-sided figures. A regular hexagon has 6 equal sides and interior angles of 120 degrees. Octagon Stop signs are made from octagons. They are 8-sided figures. A regular octagon has 8 interior angles with a measurement of 135 degrees. 3-Demensional Shapes Sphere Basketballs are spheres. They are three dimensional circles. Cube Dice are cubes. Each face is made up of a square. Every side is exactly the same, as is every face of the cube. Pyramid The ancient pyramids are majestic. The Egyptians were very clever to use this shape as it is very strong, probably why they have survived all these years. The base of the pyramid can differ. It is a two-dimensional, regular polygon, usually a square (if it is a circle, the shape becomes a cone, not a pyramid). All of the faces
Prism Prisms are three-dimensional figures. Two parallel faces are made up of a 2-dimensional polygon. The other faces are made up of rectangles. If the base is a circle, you have a cylindar. Cylinder These candles are in the shapes of cylinders. They have a circle on both bases and no distinct faces. If you were to cut up one side and flatten the cylinder into 2 dimensions, you should have two circles that were the bases, and one rectangle. The length of the rectangle is the circumference of the circles that are the bases. |
