Number the Stars is a novel about a 10-year old girl named Annemarie whose life is suddenly immersed within the resistance movement occurring in Denmark during World War II. Annemarie quickly becomes aware that the Nazis are “relocating” the Jews out of Denmark and, only after discovering that a local button shop has been closed because the owners were Jewish, realizes that her best friend, Ellen Rosen, is also Jewish. Through a series of small heroic acts, Annemarie and her family strive to help the Rosens escape to Sweden, a free territory. Annemarie finds herself delivering a package to her uncle in the middle of night when three soldiers stop her. Scared of being detected, Annemarie acts like a child – all innocence and snobbery – and eventually delivers the package to her Uncle Henrick. It is only at the culmination of the novel that we, the reader, and Annemarie become fully aware of the importance of that particular package. Successfully getting the Rosens out of Denmark, Annemarie realizes that she may never see her best friend again and chooses to wear Ellen’s Star of David necklace as a token of her friendship and ultimate courage. |
