"Driving from San Diego to Tucson"

Study Questions:

  1. Describe context and participants for this interpretation based on the exercise title and the picture of the speaker.
Amber Lewnes will discuss one memorable trip from San Diego to Tucson to a friend who is planning a road trip.

  2. Find an example of spatial relationships.  Are these relationships preserved in your interpretation?
"Keep going until you find 8 east, and you'll follow that all the way through the desert..."
I feel that I portrayed the relationships fairly well. I knew that off ramps are generally on the right, but I also added in the directions for 8 east.

  3. Find an example of temporal relations.  Are these relations preserved in your interpretation?
The entire passage was an example of temporal relations—where you go each step of the way.  I do not feel like I retained this information as well as I could have.  She was talking so fast it was hard to keep up, so I felt like I needed to rush things.

  4. What are the logical relations in this text?  Does your interpretation preserve the message and the logical relations?
Logical relations: where the driver is in relation to the road; where the car is in relation to the road; where the road is in relation to the school; where the school is in relation to the grassy areas and sculptures that are set up on the campus.  Since I have never been to the University of Arizona I do not have a schema for what the campus looks like.  In my mind, I pictured the school buildings on either side of a road lined with statues, and that is what I tried to say in my interpretation.

  5. Write one hypothesis that you developed that proved to be accurate.  Write one hypothesis that you developed that proved to be inaccurate.
Correct hypothesis: I set up the sign at the Arizona border on the right.  That is generally where road signs are set up, so I assume I was correct.

Incorrect hypothesis: I am unsure if this hypothesis was incorrect or not because I have not seen the campus, but I am unsure if I set up the campus street and statues correctly.
