His boat has 2 sails
Sail at 90 degrees to the wind, otherwise it is really difficult
Be aware of small details
If you are upwind (or uphill) sail 35 degrees and 35 degress making a zig-zag pattern
Hist favorite hobby is sailing
If someone has a better boat or more skill they will beat him, but for the most part not
Enjoyable
3. To increase your extralinguistic knowledge, look on a map to locate San Diego and Catalina Island. Look up sailing techniques and terminology and write the new information in the space provided.
4. What is the speaker's intent? Write a single sentence that expresses the main idea of the selection.
Sailing is a complicated task, but if you have the right skills and knowledge it will be one of your favorite hobbies.
5. Consecutively interpret the passage. If you are working into a spoken language, use an audio recorder to record your interpretation. If you are working into a signed language, use a video recorder. The tape has pauses that are indicated by a beep tone. Press the pause button on your VCR if you need to give yourself additional time to render the consecutive interpretation.
5 Step Follow-Up
Step 1: Interpretation Rendered
Transcribe the portions of the interpretation you would like to improve.
For me, sailing is not getting from A to B.
FOR ME SAILING NOT BACK-AND-FORTH (hand movement).
A ketch, two masts, a yawl, also two masts.
K-E-T-C-H TWO M-A-S-T-S. Y-A-W-L SAME TWO M-A-S-T-S.
One has to be aware of where the wind is coming from, and how intense the wind is.
WIND BLOW. WHERE FROM? HOW-MUCH WIND BLOW.
In order to control your boat and get it to sail where you want it to sail, you have to be aware.....
IF WANT CONTROL BOAT, WHERE-GO, MUST AWARE WIND WHERE 1.
The best wind to sail in is 90 degress to the beam.
BEST WIND SAIL 90%..90 DEGREES O-N B-E-A-M.
For example, if you enjoy going to an island--from here in San Diego I like to go to Catalina...
IF ENJOY GO-TO ISLAND. HERE S-A-N D-I-E-G-O GO-TO ISLAND C-A-T-A-L-I-N-A.
Step 2: Revisions
Write a revised interpretation for each error identified in Step 1 that better preserves the meaning of the original message.
Original: FOR ME SAILING NOT BACK-AND-FORTH (hand movement).
Revised: FOR ME SAILING NOT ONLY FROM "A TO B" BACK-AND-FORTH (hand movement). Omission 4 = Minimal
Original: K-E-T-C-H TWO M-A-S-T-S. Y-A-W-L SAME TWO M-A-S-T-S.
Revised: K-E-T-C-H HAVE TWO M-A-S-T-S. Y-A-W-L HAVE SAME TWO M-A-S-T-S. Inadequate target language proficiency 5 = None
Original: WIND BLOW. WHERE FROM? HOW-MUCH WIND BLOW.
Revised: WIND BLOW WHICH DIRECTION. HOW-MUCH WIND. Nonconservation of paralinguistic elements 5 = None
Original: IF WANT CONTROL BOAT, WHERE-GO, MUST AWARE WIND WHERE 1.
Revised: IF WANT CONTROL BOAT, WHERE-GO MUST AWARE WIND WHERE. ALSO.... Nonconservation of paralinguistic elements 5 = None
Original: IF ENJOY GO-TO ISLAND. HERE S-A-N D-I-E-G-O GO-TO ISLAND C-A-T-A-L-I-N-A.
Revised: IF WANT GO ISLAND... HERE S-A-N D-I-E-G-O ME LIKE GO ISLAND CALLED C-A-T-A-L-I-N-A (set up each place in space).
Inadequate target language proficiency 3 = Moderate
Step 3: Determine Error Types
Choose one of the five types of reasons for each of your errors.
Literal translation
Inadequate language proficiency (source language or target language)
Omission
Addition
Nonconservation of paralinguistic elements
Step 4: Effect of Error on Communicative Function
Decide on the severity of each error.
Step 5: Action Plan
Once you have determined the reason for error in the interpretating process and its impact on the communicative function, write down what action you plan to take to improve your work.
I plan on doing this activity again, and, now that it is warm, trying to preserve the meaning as well as any paralinguistic elements that were previously not preserved. I also need to do a better job at setting up things in space, and plan to do so in my second interpretation of this activity.

Curried Goat "

Once you have determined the reason for error in the interpretating process and its impact on the communicative function, write down what action you plan to take to improve your work.
I plan to do a lot things differently with my next interpretation of this passage. I think I kept Ena's affect fairly well, but I think my word choice could have been a little different, and could have yielded a better message. I plan on watching the entire passage again, now that it is warm, and consecutively interpreting it all over.
