What are the different regions or zones of the ocean? | What are the different Oceans? |
Some Animals Found in the Ocean |
- The Sunlight Zone: From the surface of the ocean to about 200 meters below. This is the warmest layer and the only zone with plants. Sharks live in this zone. - The Twilight Zone: This is from about 200 meters to 1000 meters below the surface. The only plants found here are those filtered down from above. One animal that lives in this zone is the eel. The Midnight Zone: It is 1,000 to 4,000 meters deep. Bioluminescence or light that is produced by a plant or animal, is the only light found in this region. Most animals in this region are "sit and wait" predators like the female angler fish. The Abyss: This is from 2,000 to 6,000 meters. Animals in this region must be able to withstand an extreme amount of water pressure. This layer is low in oxygen, food, and nutrients. The deep water squid lives in this region. - The Trenches: This is the deepest part of the ocean located from 6,000 meters to the sea floor. The deepest trench in the world is the Mariana Trench, which is 36,797 ft. There are very few living organisms in this region due to the freezing temperatures.
