GIS - Mapping

Start | Customize | Shapes | Label | Hotlinks | Print | Picture format

To connect to GIS - ArcView GIS 3.3       

  • Login to a computer in ITC001 with your username and password
  • Double click on the Macintosh HD icon in the upper right corner of the desktop
  • Click on the Applications folder
  • Click on CoRD
  • Click on the computer icon at the top of the window
  • Type in ts5.wou.edu (or ts6.wou.edu) followed by your username and password; click on Connect
  • In the next window, select MASH and enter your username and password again

To start your map       

  • Click on START in the lower left corner, then All Programs and finally on ArcvVew GIS 3.3 program
    OR
    • Click on MyComputer (upper left corner); select the V:drive (scroll down in right column)
    • Select Programs folder, then the Labs folder, then the Courses folder, then the Natural Science folder
    • Double click on the ArcView GIS 3.3 folder
    • Double click on the ArcView GIS 3.3 program
      THEN
  • Click on the button next to the Create a new project "with a new views"; click OK
  • Click Yes to add new data
  • Double click on the ESRI folder on the V:drive
  • Double click on the Monmouth_data folder
  • Double click on the gisdata folder
  • In the left box, scroll down and click on the taxlot.shp
  • Holding down the shift key, you may also click on a few other .shp files to select them (you'll have to guess what they might be by the names; try roads, woubldgs)
  • Click OK
  • Click the button next to each of the .shp files (called "themes") one at a time to see what it looks like
    Note: you'll have to turn each one off again so it won't cover the next one.
  • Themes are layered, with the top theme on the list (called the "table of contents") being the top layer
  • To move a different layer to top, click on it once to select it, then drag it up to the top of the table of contents.
  • Follow this procedures to put a solid colored layer at the bottom, and less solid layers (such as a roads or buildings) on top
Note: At this point, stop and save your map (File>Save). Change the drive (lower left corner) to your H:drive (MyDocuments on Macs). Give your map a name and click OK.

To customize the look of your map       

  • To change the color of any theme, double click on the colored rectangle next to it.
  • The Legend Editor will open
  • Double click on the Symbol and the Fill Palette will open.
  • Click on the Paintbrush to see the color palette.
  • Notice that Foreground is selected in the rectangle labeld "color"
  • Choose any color to change the foreground color of the theme.
  • To change the outline or background, click on the arrow next to Foreground.
  • Notice that the Fill Palette has several other buttons at the top. These buttons can change the color or design of text, symbols or fill, depending on the type of theme you are working with.
  • After you've made your choices, close the FIll Palette. Then click Apply on the box below.
  • Close the Legend Editor

To add your own shapes (buildings, etc.)       

  • Click on the Magnifying Glass button above.
  • Click and drag a square around the part of the view you wish to magnify
  • Repeat until the area you want is as large as you want it
  • From the View menu, choose New Theme
  • From the drop-down menu in the box, select Polygon
  • Click OK
  • Under Drive, switch to the H:drive
  • Give your theme a name (with a .shp extension)
  • Click OK
  • You new theme will appear at the top of the Table of Contents with a dotted line around the checkmark--which means you can now edit it.
  • Click and hold on the Draw button (last button on teh right of the bottom row of buttons)
  • Drag down to the irregular-shaped ploygon
  • To draw a new shpae on the map, click once on each corner, then double click over the starting point to close the shape
  • You may add as many shapes to the theme as you wish. Use this method to draw buildings, parks, regions, etc. Be sure to create a new theme for each different type of shape
  • When you finish adding shapes to your theme, choose Stop Editing from the Theme menu.
  • Click Yes to save your edits
  • The last shape you created will be yellow because it is selected. To deselect it, click on the Deselect All button (the one that looks like a white rectangle with three small squares down the left side)

To label features       

  • To label the shpaes, click and hold on the Text tool (2nd button from right on bottom row of buttons) and choose the label style you want from the drop-down menu
  • Click and drag where you want the first label
  • When you release the mouse, the Text Properties Box will appear
  • Type your text in the box
  • Select the alignment you want
  • Click OK
  • To change the look of your type, double click on the label with the Pointer Tool (arrow)
  • Choose the Font Palette button (button with ABC on it)
  • Make the desired changes
  • Close the Font Palette

To create hotlinks to pictures (Optional--you may skip this section)(Note: pictures must be in Windows bitmap format. See directions below to change format if necessary.)

  • Click on the theme you want to link to make it active (this may need to be your new theme)
  • Click on the Open Theme Table button (looks like a sheet of paper with a graph on it)
  • From the Table menu, choose Start Editing
  • For the Field Name, type Image
  • For the Type, choose String
  • For the width, type in 30 (this is the width in characters)
  • Click OK
  • Click on the Edit button (middle button on the bottom row)
  • Click in the first cell of the Image field
  • Type in the path to yoru iamge, starting with the drive letter (example: h:bucym\picture.bmp)
  • Press Return (Enter)
  • Type in the path for the next image in the next cell
  • Press Return
  • When you've added all your pictures, from the Table menu, choose Stop Editing
  • Note: if you need to return to this later, you'll hve to choose Start Editing from the Table menu
  • Click Yes to save edits
  • Close the Theme Table
  • From the Theme menu, choose Properties
  • Scroll down to HotLink on the left and click to select it
  • For Field, choose Image
  • For Predefined Action, choose Link to Image File
  • In the Script box, Link.ImageFile will be automatically selected
  • Click OK
  • Click on the HotLink button (looks like a lighning bolt)
  • Click on one of your shpaes and the image it is linked to should pop up

To create layout to print       

  • In the Project Window, click on the Layouts icon on the left (this window may be hidden behind your view. You can switch to it from the Window menu. It may still be called "untitled.")
  • Click New
  • From the Layout menu, choose Page Setup
  • Click on the Landscape button in the Orientation field
  • Click OK
  • Click on the Maximize button to enlarge the page (middle button on upper right of Layout window--between the - and the X)
  • *Click on the Frame tool (far right button on bottom button bar) and hold until drop-down menu appears
  • Select the View frame (top button)
  • Click on the page and drag a box to hold your map
  • When you release the mouse, the View Frame Properties bo appears
  • Select the View that holds your map (probably View 1)
  • Click OK
  • Repeat the last six steps (starting with *) for each element you want on the page. Try the different Frame tools to see which elements you get--you can delete those you don't want
  • You can resize elements by clicking and draggin a handle with the Pointer tool
  • You can move elements by clicking and dragging on the middle of them with the Pointer tool
  • Rearrange elements on the page until you are pleased with the design
  • To add a title to the page, click on the Text tool (T)
  • Click on the page where you want the text to start
  • A Text Properties box will appear
  • Type in your title, thenm click OK
  • To change the type size, use the Pointer tool to drag the text box bigger
  • To make other changes to the text, from the Window menu, choose Show Symbol Window
  • Click on the Font Palette
  • Make the desired changes
  • Close the Font Palette
  • Use the Pointyer tool to move the title to the desired position
  • From the Draw tool drop-down menu (2nd to last button on right, bottom button bar) select the Rectangle
  • Draw a rectangle to form a frame around the page
  • From the File menu, select Print
  • Click OK

To change picture format       

  • Locate the picture you want to change to a bitmap (the only format that works in GIS)
  • Double click on the file icon
  • The image will open in Preview
  • At the bottom of the window, click on the Save icon (looks like a disk)
  • Click and hold on the arrow nextto "save as type"
  • From the drop-down menu, choose BMP
  • Click Save
  • Repeat the above steps for eqach picture you wish to change
  • Pictures are now saved in your folder. You may now add them to GIS as hotlinks
Note: you may change the format of pictures in the Mac lab using PhotoShop and these same general directions. Once saved, you can access them from Macs or PCs.
