Psychology in Argentina
|
Rosario, Argentina is the perfect place to study psychology from a cross-cultural viewpoint. A big, bustling city with Latin American charm, and access to a major university, as well as spectacular eco-friendly activities provides the backdrop for study and intercultural experience. The two courses that I will be offerring tap two different levels of Argentine life. The first course Culture and Mental Health in Argentina allows students a peek into psychological aspects of this vibrant country. And, while studying issues in Argentina, we will study our own American culture as well. The second course Cross-cultural Industrial/Organizational Psychology examines a pillar of any culture, the world of work. As a major Argentine business and commercial center, Rosario offers unique opportunities to explore cultural impacts on the way organizations operate. See the links below for more detail on these courses.
If you have ever dreamed of studying abroad, this is your chance. Becoming a global citizen and developing intercultural competence is not only challenging and self-fulfilling, it is also an important advantage in today’s globalized job market. Your encounters with the Argentine culture will expand your world view dramatically. Students returning from study abroad typically say “This experience changed my life.” It’s an exciting time both inside the classroom and out.
Please accept my invitation to join me in Rosario in Fall, 2010. I am looking forward to a year with two Springs (it will be Springtime in Argentina just as it grows colder in the U.S.) I expect to have a very rewarding experience both academically and culturally. I hope that you will share that experience with me in Rosario.
Below is information about the two psychology courses being offerred. Please click on the details you want to examine.
Culture and Mental Health in Argentina |
Cross-cultural Industrial/Organizational Psychology in Argentina |
What constitutes “mental health,” “healing,” “personality,” and even “self” gain their meaning from the cultural context in which they are defined. Studying these concepts while in another culture reveals the necessity of including culture as background for many psychological phenomena. We will survey a set of topics that emphasizes recognition of positive mental health; as well as those that touch upon abnormal psychology and aspects of psychological treatment. Topics may include: personality, definitions of normality, interpersonal communication, psychological treatment, sex and gender, among others. A major emphasis will be the impact of culture on behavior and practices in Argentina. |
Organizations are moving from domestic to multinational and beyond to trans-national or global strategies. Thus they must account for cultural differences such as underlying values toward work, orientation toward gender relations, emphasis on groups versus individuals, ideas about personal development, leadership, and family. Ignoring culture can lead to misunderstandings and conflict. Industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology applies psychological findings to work in organizations (usually business, education, government and non-profits). Organizations in all countries share the need to enhance productivity and to foster innovation and commitment from their employees. This course will illustrate how culture affects basic organizational functions. |
