The name implies the subject matter: an exploration into artistic complexities. The artists hope to inspire amazement in the viewer as they peruse these very unique drawings, paintings, and sculpture. We want them to delve deeply into the intricate workings of an autistic mind and see the similarities in subject and form from works by his family. I think that they will come away with a deeper appreciation of the creativity and dynamic expression from a person that has had to wear a label of “retarded” all of his life. From that I hope that they will see in him what his family sees in him, and why we look to him for inspiration in our own art and life. Kelvin Allen is the primary artist of the show: with related works by his family, Robert Allen (his father) and Teiel Allen (his sister).
"Autism (sometimes called “classical autism”) is the most common condition in a group of developmental disorders known as the autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Autism is characterized by impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and unusual, repetitive, or severely limited activities and interests. Other ASDs include Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (usually referred to as PDD-NOS). Experts estimate that three to six children out of every 1,000 will have autism. Males are four times more likely to have autism than females." -- NIND
