-Male narwals weigh up to 3,500 pounds (1,600 kilograms). -Female narmals weigh up to 2,200 pounds (1,200 kilograms). -The pigmentation of the narwhal is a mottled black and white pattern. They are darkest when born and become whiter in color with age. -The male narwhal has a single 2–3 meter (7–10 ft) long tusk that projects from the left side of the upper jaw. -The tusk can be up to 3 meters (9.8 ft) long and weigh up to 22 pounds (10 kilograms). -A female narwhal has a shorter, and straighter tusk. -The most accepted theory for the role of the tusk is as a secondary secondary characteristic, similar to the mane of a lion or the tail feathers of a peacock. |
