Common Names Western yellow, yellow, pndosa, ponderosa, blackjack or bull pine (Hitchcock et al., 1969). Synonyms Pinus ponderosa var. scopulorum Englm., Pinus scpulorum Lemmon. Plant tree. 50–60 m tall. Bark thick and furrowed. Dark reddish brown to blackish. Leaves needle like. In 3's. 5–10 cm long. Spiral. Monomorphic. Stomatal lines absent. Sexuality monecious. Female strobili cones (not berry-like). Ovate. 8–14 cm long. Tips of upper branches. Seed 0.6–0.7 cm long. Wing 3–4 times as long as seed. Male strobili shape unknown. 0.8–1 cm long. Yellow to purplish. Strongly clustered.
