Fission

• A large mass nuclei is split into two or more smaller mass nuclei

• Ideally, the resulting nuclei will have mass numbers closer to 56

• Some neutrons are also emitted

• Fission can occur when the unstable large mass atom captures a neutron, or it can happen spontaneously
