• Important in bioleaching processes where anaerobic conditions exist

• Can also obtain energy from oxidizing Cu+, Se2+, & from oxidation of Sb, U & Mo compounds

Red-orange color due to

production of Fe(III) as

T. ferrooxidans oxidizes Fe(II)
