• Mathematically derived by

  • cumulative ozone depletion of compound/ ozone depletion by an equal amount of CFC-12

• Example: methyl chloride (major natural chloride source) has ODP=0.1

  • for equal amounts of CH3Cl & CFC-12 released, CH3Cl would degrade 1/10th the ozone of CFC-12
