Prewriting

Prewriting allows the writer to generate ideas and build a road map for their story.

Prewriting not only helps generate ideas, but it also keeps the writer organized. Here are some popular ways to prewrite: free write, draw a picture, brainstorm with a partner, complete a graphic organizer, activate your 5 senses to put yourself in a new surrounding.

Practice using each of the following prewriting activities.

Free write: ...free time to write about whatever you want! You will start the timer and then begin writing for 1 minute. Here's the challenge: can you write for 1 whole minute without lifting your pen from the paper?

Draw a picture: If you are having trouble getting your ideas down using words, draw a picture.
Brainstrom with a partner: Look at the story topics and decide which topic you want to discuss. Once you have found a topic to discuss, turn and talk to a partner. Share your story idea, what happens?

Complete a graphic organizer: Fill in one of the graphic orgaizers below to help get your story outlined and organized.

Activate your 5 senses: Use the pictures to activate your imagination. After you have imagined being in the picture, answer the questions about your five senses.

Here's the challenge: can you close your eyes and imagine you are actually in the picture?

What does it smell like? What does it feel like? If you look all around, what do you see? What does it smell like? Is there a taste?
