Life Cycle of the Whales

A baby whale is

called a calf.

A mother whale is called a cow.

The father is called a bull.

Whale calves are born under water.

They can swim as soon as or shortly after their birth.

The babies must go to the surface as soon as they are born in order to breathe.

The mother helps the baby to the surface to take its first breath of air.

Babies are born in warmer waters.

Mother whales feed their young and stay with them for about one year,

until they are ready to feed for themselves.
