Play against a friend or against the computer, but to win at this game you must be able to create the larger decimal from given random digits.

Select the Chapter 7 applet--Distributions. Once you have launched the applet, play around with it a bit to see how it works.

As a tile moves randomly across a grid, you are challenged to predict the square at the opposite edge of a grid upon which the tile will most likely land. It is interesting that such random movements when applied to many tiles produce dependable patterns.

Chapter 7 Online Assignment

  1. Run 9 experiments--note you have to choose "Start Experiment" and then "Spin" or "Autospin" to complete an experiment. The spin color determines whether the tile moves left or right. Change the number of outcomes and the number of chips several times, use 7 outcomes and 64 chips at least once (use Autospin!).
  2. Record your results; you may wish to print the pages (check print preview; if regular printing doesn't work, use the PRINT SCREEN button, then print). Include diagrams of the finished grid and the corresponding bar graph for each of your 10 experiments. An example diagram is shown here:

  3. Answer the question posed in the applet: For each type of grid and for 128 chips, predict the number of chips on average that can be expected to land in each of the lettered outcomes. Explain your answer (you should have 6 answers here: 2 chips, 3 chips, ..., 7 chips).
