"Early Years of William Shakespeare"

Study Questions:

  1. Describe the context and participants for this interpretation based on the exercise title and picture of the speaker.
Bobbi Jordan is a middle school teacher.  Today she will be discussing the topic, “Early Years of William Shakespeare” to her 8th grade class.

  2. Did the self-monitoring process distract you while you were interpreting?  If so what did you do?
I already have a hard time with self-correcting AND listening to the incoming message.  This is due to my insufficient STM.  I know I need to work on this.  Therefore, the self-monitoring process did distract me quite a bit while I was interpreting, and I am pretty sure some important details were left out because of that. I tried to focus on one thing at a time to make sure that my interpretation was intelligible, as well as make sure I knew what was coming next.

  3. How Stressful was it to consciously monitor your interpretation while interpreting this passage?  Circle the answer that most closely describes your reaction and say why.  Did your interpretation show your level of stress?

    Not very stressful
    Stressful
    Moderately stressful
    Very stressful

Monitoring my interpretation was mildly stressful because Bobbi was talking so fast and there was a lot of information being presented (or so it felt like it).  I am still trying to cling to much to how things are said, trying to retain as much of the vocabulary as possible, instead of keeping the same ideas.  This is something that I have realized about myself and will continue to work on.
  1. Based on your impression of your interpretation, rate yourself on each of the following factors.  You will examine these more closely when you complete the follow-up.

  1. Did correcting your interpretation cause you to lose your place in processing the incoming message?  If so, what did you do?
While self-correcting I noticed that I could barely understand the incoming message.  If I tried to focus more on the incoming message I would loose track of what I was saying in my interpretation.  This is something that I need to work on by expanding my memory.
