"Trip to Hong Kong"

Study Questions

  1. Describe the context and participants for this interpretation based on the exercise title and picture of the speaker.
Leslie is a high school teacher who will share a story about her trip to Hong Kong.

  2. What is the gist of the passage?
Leslie had quite an adventure on her first trip to Hong Kong.

  3. What strategies did you use to focus your listening on the speaker’s message?
As I was listening I tried to form the message in ASL in my head.  This made it easier for me to continue to listen to the English source because I was dropping all the English words in my reformulation.  Sometimes, when I could not follow the speaker and complete my thought, I made the decision to focus on my production of the message and then go back to listening.

  4. What strategies did you use to remember what you heard?
We have already worked with this source text, so it was warm for me.  I knew what the gist of the story was, but I had forgotten some details.   If I found myself not knowing where to go with the story I thought logically about the storyline.  This helped me remember where I was in relation to the speaker, and catch up with her story.

  5. Summarize this selection in the space provided.
Leslie Rach and her husband had their first experience going to Asia four years prior to this story.  They had a lot of connecting flights, and when they were west of Anchorage, Alaska the pilot announced they would have to turn around because of mechanical problems.  They had to stay a night in Anchorage, but then the next day they were no their way to Hong Kong.  It was a frightening but fun experience for Leslie.
