9 Step Process

Context: He is telling his story for an ASL that will be distributed to high school and collegiate-age students throughout the northwest.

Step 1: PREDICTION (TAP)
- Introduce his name.
- Say where he was born.
- Say his age/when he was born.
- Talk about his childhood in New York.
- Talk about the way NYC was back then.
- Talk about his family.
- How his childhood has shaped him.
- East coast accent?

Step 4: SALIENT LINGUISTIC FEATURES
- Pace: very slow, relaxed.
- Pauses: after he introduces his name, but mostly just runs his sentences together.
- Manner/style: somewhat formal, monotone.
- Looks away when he thinks.
- Shifts from left to right feet when he talks.
- Close: voice gets quiet and he uses a softer tone.
- Accent from New York/Eas Coast.
- Transitions: "Several years later......," "In 1984....," "I am now serving that capacity......," "However," "Anyways....."
- Knods head down when he is trying to stress something: "...rewarding and spiritual uplift in the community."

Step 5: ABSTRACTION
Life is a journey that should be remembered, enjoyed, and appreciated.

Step 6: RE-TELL IN ENGLISH

Step 7: SALIENT LINGUISTIC FEATURES IN ASL
- Introduces himself, where born.
- Introduces his parents, Vivian and Eugene.
- Stresses certain things by knodding his head down (NMS?)
- Pace: slow, relaxed.
- Close: smaller, less dramatic signs.
- Pauses: not very frequently; thoughts run together; random.
