Lesson: Place Names on World Map

Grade Level: 6th

Subject: Social Studies

 

GOALS:

 Students will learn to identify and locate regions and physical features on world maps (SS.08.GE.03).  Students will be able to locate population centers on a map.   (SS.08.GE.04.01). 

 

OBJECTIVES:

The students will show where a provided list of regions, countries, areas, and population centers should be on a world map.  They should be able to place 15 out of 20 of these names correctly on the world map that will be provided for them.

PROCEDURE:

A. Anticipatory Set

ÒI gave you this test anticipating the results.  I watched a lot of you draw maps and name features on those maps without realizing what area on this planet your maps were representing.Ó

B. Teaching/Modeling:

  1. We will discuss in depth the pre-test geographic features and locations.  By holding up maps of Egypt, the unit they just completed, we will discuss features and cities around the Mediterranean Sea and show them where each one is located on the pre-test maps.
  2. Then with the websites I am going to show them valuable tools that will help them in the future and have some fun.

 

MEETING VARYING NEEDS:

 

 

 

ASSESSMENT:

The post-assessment test will be given.  The questions will not be in the same order but will be the same.  This gives every student an equal opportunity to do really good by putting in a little study time.
